Vocation & Vision

A new kind of family.

Vocation

Table Community Church exists as a new kind of family,

Accepting and extending Christ’s invitation to communion and sacrificial love,

Thereby welcoming the kindom of God, a kingdom of peace.

Vision

We see our life together in Christ as an opportunity to practice setting the table for others,

offering restoration through love and hospitality to those we meet along the way,

For the renewal of Portland, ME, and all of creation.

Our hope of a loving, compassionate, and just world centers around the table. The table is where people gather for nourishment, communion, story-telling and laughter. Imagine a big, round farm table that is weathered and marked by generations of use. It is the table where bread is kneaded, where children play games, where families and friends share meals. Everyone shares in the joys and burdens of this world. Life in all of its messiness and celebration, is found at the table.

We take the table with us—picnic tables in parks and cities, card tables at community centers, trays around hospital beds, blankets at the beach, dining tables in homes. Our table is dynamic and portable; it is meant to travel with us as we go about our lives and to be shared with those we encounter along the way.

When we gather at the table, we rest our weight on four supports—

The Word

We honor Scripture as the living word of God and believe as scripture tells us: that Jesus is the word made flesh and that the life and ethic of Jesus are the ultimate guide on our journey.

The Spirit

The Spirit is our guide on this journey. We are people and a community in progress, striving to follow Jesus with humility. Jesus modeled contemplation so we too are cultivating a contemplative lifestyle by paying attention to the still voice of God.

Restoration

We believe that justice for the poor and oppressed comes through restoration of peace through sacrificial love. In this light, we are committed to sharing the kind of hope and healing that we understand Jesus to have offered to the weary, forgotten, and oppressed.

Community

We follow Jesus together. We believe there is a seat at the table for everyone, and take seriously our responsibility to care for each other, our neighborhood, humankind and the earth.
